How to use a defibrillator

Turn it on

Open the case — most AEDs switch on automatically, or press the power button. Follow the voice and visual instructions.

Attach the pads

Place the pads on bare skin as shown in the diagram — one below the right collarbone, one on the lower left side of the chest.

Let it analyse

Make sure nobody is touching the patient. The AED analyses the heart rhythm and tells you whether a shock is needed.

Deliver the shock if advised

Stand clear, then press the button if the AED advises a shock. Continue CPR immediately after until help arrives.

You cannot harm someone by using a defibrillator — they will only deliver a shock if one is needed.
